In my dreams, he lay across my lap
The heavy weight of his head,
Burdened by the things he's seen.

She has no arm--it's gone.
A traumatic injury. It's healed by now.
She still reaches with it.

Who am I still trying to save?
Is it worth the time it takes?
Or am I just fighting in vain?

Rubber mistakes on the road
From the wrong path taken--
Decide where to go before you go.

I promised I'd set her free;
I lied to her and to myself.
My reflection in her glass skin
Was so beautiful in that birdcage,
I couldn't let her go.
The pain was too much to bear.
